Mission Estate Mulled Wine recipe

Mission Estate Mulled Wine recipe

As the mornings get darker and colder, and Autumn starts to set in, it is only fitting that March 3rd is International Mulled Wine Day. In celebration of such a delicious day, we are sharing our mulled wine recipe with you.

Mulled wine, also referred to as spiced wine, is an alcoholic drink made with red wine, a varying variety of spices, fruits, and sometimes spirits. Served hot or warm, it is believed mulled wine first originated during the 2nd century BC.

Being such a great winter warmer, it is very common to find mulled wine in the United Kingdom during winter and around Christmas time. Many other countries have adapted the traditional mulled wine recipe; in Germany it’s called glüwhein, in Nordic countries it’s called glögg.

Ingredients

  • 2 bottles of red wine – we recommend our Mission Estate Merlot
  • 2 oranges – sliced
  • 6 cardamom pods
  • 1 teaspoon allspice – 9 berries
  • 1 teaspoon cloves – whole
  • 4 star anise
  • 3 sticks cinnamon
  • 4 tablespoons demerara sugar or any other sweetener of choice
  • sliced orange to garnish

Method

  1. Bruise the cardamom pods with the back of a knife.
  2. Put all ingredients except the sugar into a pot over medium-low heat.
  3. Before it starts to boil, remove it from the heat and add sugar.
  4. Let it sit for up to 30 minutes, strain, and serve.
  5. To garnish, put a few slices of orange in the glass or mug, along with a cinnamon stick.

NB: To keep the mulled wine warm for a longer time, put it on a really low heat and pour it into glasses as your guests arrive.
