Our sustainability practices go far beyond compliance – they’re part of who we are. From the way we grow and harvest to how we bottle and power our winery, we take pride in minimising our footprint and maximising positive impact.

We’ve held ISO14001 environmental certification since 1998, and regularly review our practices to ensure our sustainability goals are met – and exceeded.

OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY
As a proud founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ), we’ve built a culture of care and accountability. Our commitment is backed by independent certification and shaped by evolving standards.

Minimising our impact across the business
Every part of our wine production – from vineyard to bottling – is carefully managed to reduce environmental impact. Our winery was purpose-built for maximum energy and water efficiency, and in 2007 underwent a major upgrade to further enhance sustainability. In 2023, we installed 63kW of solar panels, and in 2024, we planted 52,000 native trees on the property as part of our reforestation efforts. By applying thoughtful technology and science, we’re able to reduce our environmental impact while staying true to our winemaking tradition. The current production facility has been designed to deliver maximum energy and water efficiencies which is a vital element in our ongoing commitment to the environment. We are certifiably sustainable
Looking ahead: biodiversity and regeneration
As caretakers of this land for more than 170 years, we feel a deep responsibility to protect and enhance its natural character for future generations. In recent years, we’ve completed large-scale native tree planting across the gullies and hills surrounding our Taradale home – an initiative aimed at restoring habitats and naturally reducing our carbon footprint.
Our estate supports a rich ecosystem, with abundant birdlife, wetlands, woodlands, and a working sheep and cattle farm. The Taipo Stream runs through our home vineyards and is monitored by the Hawke’s Bay Regional Council – a reflection of our ongoing commitment to the health of this land and its waterways.
