The ultimate expression of winemaking at Mission, Huchet wines proudly honour Brother Cyprian Huchet. The son of a French vigneron from the Loire, he became New Zealand’s pioneering winemaker whilst working at Mission in 1871. Produced in very limited quantities and only from outstanding years. His inspiration is a legacy we continue.

The 2019 Huchet Syrah was the only New Zealand Syrah to win a masters medal in the 2022 Global Wine Masters Competition. The competition is judged blind by some of the finest palates in the world. This allows the preconceived notions based on the location of the wine to be deducted, and the importance focused purely on style. It is complex and intense showing rich black fruits plum and raspberry notes. An intriguing note only achieved in this vineyard partners with soft white spices, subtle cedar and sandalwood with hints of vanilla. Full bodied and robust with great power, depth of flavour and a long finish.

The vintage will cellar gracefully for 10-20 years – the perfect gift or special occasion wine, it comes packed in its own individual gift box.

Estate Sauvignon Blanc

International Wine Challenge | Gold Medal
James Suckling | 95 Points

Complex aromas of berries, and ruby stone. Notes of rock salt and earthy, autumn leaves gives good structure and sophistication. Full and layered with tension. Very Hermitage like! Long with fine finesse. Screw cap. Drink or hold.

Michael Cooper | 5 Stars

This arresting red will age gracefully for decades. Matured for a year in French oak barrels, it is dark and highly fragrant, with substantial body, an array of dense, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, showing impressive complexity, and refined, supple tannins. A lovely mouthful.

Sam Kim, Wine Orbit | 97 Points

Offering outstanding fruit purity and power, the wine shows dark fruit richness together with violet, cedary oak, olive and pepper spice notes on the nose, leading to a wonderfully weighted palate displaying flowing mouthfeel and loads of silky tannins. Gorgeously harmonious, richly textured and impressively long. At its best: 2024 to 2039.

Taste history in a glass. Grown and bottled by Mission Estate Huchet Chardonnay - named after Brother Cyprian Huchet, one of New Zealand’s pioneering winemakers (circa 1870). A brilliant dark ruby core with powerful aromas, distinctively fruity with scents of dark plums and black cherries, blue fruits then bold spices of French oak and brown spices of clove and vanilla with a bacon (oak) edginess with a natural peppery lift. Complex and youthful with a core of ripe blue fruits and raspberry, black currant and toasty barrel spices. Firm tannins with a stony chalky mouthfeel, plenty of acidity and long persistent finish. A wine to watch, cellar for another 12-18 months with best drinking from 2022 through 2028+. 95 Points. Outstanding.

REGION

REGION REGION

Hawke’s Bay

Located on the east coast of the North Island, Hawke's Bay wine region is one of the warmest winegrowing regions in New Zealand. The long and warm growing season provides for excellent ripening conditions and full flavour development.

New Zealand Winegrowing

Central to the success of New Zealand as a world-renowned wine growing region is the temperate maritime climate and the free-draining alluvial soils.

The growing season is long, providing perfect conditions for slow ripening and full flavour development. Cool nights and warm days retain fruit acidity which lends a freshness and vibrancy, highly characteristic of New Zealand wine styles.

Soils

Gravel beds, free-draining alluvial soils and stony terraces.

Growing season

Warm and dry delivering intense and characterful wines.
