Varietally expressive and fabulously lifted, showing lychee, mango, orange peel and rose petal aromas on the nose. The palate is equally attractive with juicy fruit flavours and smooth mouthfeel, well supported by bright acidity, making it immediately approachable.

A consistent GG selection, Antoine is easily one of NZ’s most polished Bordeaux blends. Predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), which shinned this vintage, supported by Cabernet Franc (20%) and Merlot (15%), the wine matured for 12 months in French oak barrels (60% new). Dense and fragrant, pronounced plum, blackberry accented by dark chocolate, cigar box and graphite. Classic and refined, young and vigorous, promising a long life ahead. 13.7%. 5/5. NZ$50. Drink 2023–2030.

Named after pioneer winemaker Father Antoine Gavin, the classy, extremely ageworthy 2020 vintage (5*) is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (65 per cent), Cabernet Franc (20 per cent) and Merlot (15 per cent). Harvested from vines 10 to 23 years old, it was matured for a year in French oak barriques (60 per cent new). Mouthfilling, with very deep, purple-flushed colour, it is highly concentrated, with dense blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, oak complexity and refined tannins. A classically structured wine with obvious potential, it should break into full stride 2027+.

This complex red is made with grapes grown on Mere Road vineyard on the Gimblett Gravels and derives its impressive colour from 14 to 30 days maceration, post ferment, followed by a year of ageing in French barrels, 60% new. Ripe fruit tannins lead into a warming spicy Syrah with dark fruit flavours of plums, underpinned by spicy notes of anise, cardamon and cedary oak.
